BY LYDIA RIVERS
The Growlers latest single “Dream World” is an upbeat beach goth track with sparkly piano melodies, sunny guitar riffs, and beaming lyrics that come together to make a sound that transports the listener to a day where they’re lucky enough to find themselves in a dream world of their own.
“Dream World” pictures an ideal alternate world, available to everyone if they choose to go. The song is beautifully composed, and all of the lyrics easily make for perfect lines to scream-sing if you’re in as positive of a mood as they seem to be. If you’re not, the track is so upturned that they’ll likely manage to convince you to join them in their world with positively confident lines like “Go make your own world/If there’s not enough to choose from.”
The instrumentals tone down for Brooks Nielsen to proclaim the sweet and aptly-timed sentiment, “You can find love in the middle of a war,” before jumping right back into the jaunty song at full-speed. The seemingly purely positive track is much brighter than their previous releases, veering on the edge of an escapist fool’s paradise rather than a dream world. Still, by now I think we could all use a taste of a fantasy world — even if it’s a bit delusional, it still feels nicer than the waking world.
This doesn’t last too long though; the track was released alongside the song “Random Everyone,” a more down-turned accompaniment. The song falls more in line with their characteristic sound and attitude, but maintains the same buoyant tone of “Dream World” alongside much more darkened lyrics in comparison.
The song is the California group’s first release since their 2019 album Natural Affair, and was recorded following the sessions for their last album despite their recent release. They have not alluded to a new album, and the singles don’t appear to be attached to a larger project.
