SMOOTHBOI EZRA: “MY OWN PERSON”

BY LYDIA RIVERS

Irish songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Smoothboi Ezra continues their singles streak with a new track called, “My Own Person,” released on November 19. The track is the third single out this year for the 18 year old artist, and is a sweetly calming contemplation about what it means to really feel authentically you.

The song starts out softly, with a simple beat and clear-cut lyrics that explain how much they don’t feel like themselves. While the lyrics detail an inescapable, long-term feeling that won’t budge, “Been talking about the same problems for years now / But nothing I do seems to make things happen I try to hard I guess I gotta to keep searching,” the song picks up the pace to turn into a comforting, buoyant pop song.

Smoothboi Ezra shared in a statement that they wrote the song back when they were 16, and that it captured how far apart they felt from themselves at the time.

“I had one or two outfits I would interchange and I wore the same grubby pair of shoes every day,” Smoothboi said. “They were replicas of a previous grubby pair I wore when I was 14 and 15. The song is about not being happy but not being able to do anything about it.”

They’ve been producing music independently since 2018, and their growth is audible with each release. “My Own Person” is the first glimpse into a collection of upcoming songs that will be released throughout the next few months. I’m looking forward to listening to more Smoothboi Ezra, but until then, I’ll keep on playing those singles!
